GIFCAT 2.00
.GIF cataloguing program
GIFCAT copyright (c)1993 by Mark Knutson and Jupiter Software
Documentation courtesy of UniNova Services Corporation
DESCRIPTION
GIFCAT allows you to create and maintain a catalog of all .GIF
files that you have on a disk, and store the catalog on the same
disk with the .GIF files. You can enter and edit a description
for each GIF, and print those GIF descriptions to see what is on
a disk, without actually listing the disk directory or viewing
the GIFs with a GIF viewer.
DISCLAIMER
GIFCAT has been thoroughly tested on a wide variety of systems,
but there is always the possibility that it will not perform as
specified on any given system. Therefore, no warranty, express
or implied, is included with GIFCAT. The author will not be held
liable for any damages due to any use, misuse, or inability to
use the GIFCAT software. If you do not agree to the terms of this
disclaimer, please delete GIFCAT from your system without using
it.
REGISTRATION
The file you are presently reading accompanies the shareware copy
of GIFCAT. Shareware is for evaluation and testing purposes
only, NOT for regular use! Registration is only $ and entitles
you to the registered copy of the program -- without annoying
"SHAREWARE" screens, more complete documentation, free minor
upgrades, discounts on major upgrades and free technical support
by mail.
If you decide you do not wish to register, please delete GIFCAT
from all of your disk media. It is against the law to regularly
use a shareware program without registering it, and morally
reprehensible as well.
INSTALLATION
Installing GIFCAT is a simple matter. If you do not have a hard
disk, simply place a copy of GIFCAT.EXE and GIFCAT.DOC on a
floppy disk of your choice. If you have a hard disk, place a copy
of GIFCAT.EXE and GIFCAT.DOC in the directory of your choice,
although it is advisable not to place it in the root directory.
If you have a hard disk, you may wish to place GIFCAT in a
directory that is in your DOS PATH. For example, you may have a
directory in your PATH called UTILS, and that may be an
appropriate location for GIFCAT. Placing the program in adirectory that is part of the DOS PATH allows you to run GIFCAT
with any disk and directory as the current default. If you need
more information about the DOS PATH, please refer to your DOS
manual. An example of a PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
which would include the \UTILS directory:
PATH C:\;C:\DOS;C:\UTILS
STARTING GIFCAT
To run the program, simply type the program name (GIFCAT) at the
DOS prompt.
USING GIFCAT
Once the program starts, the title screen displays briefly,
followed by the menu. To select an option from the menu, simply
press the key on your keyboard corresponding to the number of
that option. Pressing <Enter> at this point is not necessary.
Your menu options are:
1. Create new catalog. This is the first step when you
want to begin cataloging the GIFs you have on disk.
2. Change descriptions. This allows you to alter the
descriptions of any GIFs that are currently part of the
GIF catalog.
3. Add GIFs. This allows you to add new GIF names and
descriptions to an existing catalog. Be sure that you
have a catalog created before you attempt to add GIF
names to it.
4. Print descriptions. This option allows you to print the
descriptions in a catalog that exists on the disk you
specify. You may print it to the screen, to the
printer, or to a file on disk.
5. Delete GIFs. This is from the catalog, not actual GIFs
on the disk itself.
6. Sort GIFs. This menu selection sorts the catalog so
that directories and GIF file names appear
alphabetically.
7. Exit to DOS. This menu selection exits the program and
returns to the DOS prompt or the menu/shell you used to
call the program.
DISTRIBUTION AND USAGE RIGHTS
The GIFCAT package, including the executable file and all
supporting documents, is owned solely by the copyright owner--
the program author. Your rights to the program do not extend
beyond the specific rights given to you by the author in this
section. Under no circumstances may you alter the executable file
or the supporting documentation.
According to the rights granted here, you may: 1. Distribute this version to friends, co-workers, family
members, user groups, bulletin boards, etc. In fact,
this is encouraged! However, to distribute GIFCAT, you
must:
A)Not charge more than $10 as a copying fee;
B)Ensure that the recipient understands that any fee
paid to you does not constitute a purchase of the
program and that no money collected by you will ever
reach the author of the program;
C)Include all supporting documentation;
D)Not add any files not originally included with
GIFCAT, although shareware vendors may add a functional
and tested installation routine.
2. Change the compression (archive) format used to
distribute the package, as long as:
A)All files in the original archive are placed in the
new archive;
B)No new files are added to the new archive (no
advertisements, although a .ZIP file comment is
acceptable);
C)The name of the new archive is the same as the old
archive, with the obvious exception of the three-letter
extension. (Thus, if you receive GIFCAT20.ZIP, you can
create GIFCAT20.LZH, but not GIFCAT.LZH)
